After a person dies the estate must be administered. That means that the court must ensure that the erson who died (decedent) debts are settled and property in the decedent's name is transferred to other heirs or beneficiaries. lf the decedent dies with a will, the probate court will ensure that the wishes of the decedent are followed.
The probate court also appoints guardians and conservators for minors and incapacitated persons, orders involuntary commitments of mentally ill or chemically dependent persons, and hears and decides trust and estate litigation.
